Android gets its own official blog, read all about the OS straight from the Android team

Posted in: Android 17 hours ago by Peter So far, the Google Mobile blog has been the major source of info on Android, coming from the source. The blog, however, covers a lot of other Google mobile services (like Google’s mobile sites and apps for other mobile OSes), so when the Mountain View team received an overwhelming amount of requests for an Android-only blog, they delivered. The Official Android blog will be the go-to place to learn what’s new with the Google mobile operating system. A major Google Wallet announcement is the first piece of news to be broken by the blog. By the way, even though the Official Android blog launched just yesterday, it has plenty of content already – the Google team has aggregated various Android-related posts from all the other Google blogs and put them in one place. Here’s the blog, Android users will probably want to bookmark it for future reference. Source View the original article here

Apple’s iPad dominates tablet market with record-breaking quarter, according to IDC

Posted in: Android, iOS, Tablets 14 hours ago by Peter While Android was the undisputed ruler in the smartphone world, it’s a different story when it comes to tablets – Apple’s iPad had a record quarter and accounted for 68.2% of tablet shipments during Q2 of this year. For comparison, the biggest maker of Android tablets is Samsung and their share is just 9.6%. Going back to Apple for a moment, they beat their record Q4 2011 quarter despite shipments in mature markets losing some of their momentum, according to IDC. The other markets picked up the slack. Samsung’s shipments grew by 117.6% and solidified its second place, even though they’ve got a long, long way to go before catching up with Apple. Amazon and their single Kindle Fire tablet are doing pretty good for themselves too, snatching a 5% share of the market – this is especially impressive because the Kindle Fire was only introduced in Q4 of last year. (Preliminary) (Unit Shipments are in thousands) ASUS more than doubled the...

Dead Trigger is now free for iOS devices as well, points a finger at piracy again

Posted in: Gaming, iOS 13 hours ago by Vince Dead Trigger is available for download free of charge on the Apple App Store. After the tough decision was made for Android a while back, now Madfinger Games has decided to do the same for iOS. The problem boils down to piracy, according to the game studio’s CEO Marek Rabas. He points out that the number of pirates on iOS is roughly the same as the amount of jailbroken devices. He goes on to saying that Google and Apple aren’t providing enough protection for game studios like Madfinger. Now, the studio will have to cash in only on the freemium monetization model of the game. To compensate the gamers who have bought Dead Trigger when it was $0.99, Madfinger Games will provide them with 25 gold and 10 casino chips when the game hits its update version 1.1.2. Amazon Cloud Player adds automatic song match and upgrade feature like iTunes

Amazon unveiled a pretty major update to their Cloud Player service that launched early last year. The update makes the Player more independent from Cloud Drive and offers a free, automatic audio quality upgrade, similar to iTunes Match. The audio upgrade program is pretty neat – music on your hard drive will be scanned and matching songs (that Amazon has the rights to) will be upgraded to a high-quality 256Kbps version and they won’t even have to be uploaded. That will work on songs already in your Cloud Drive (plus you can access the original files). From now on, when you buy a song from Amazon, it will be automatically be imported into Cloud Player too. Songs you’ve purchased previously will be imported too (again, if Amazon has the rights to do so). You can now manually edit track metadata, but you can also just use the data provided by Amazon for your imported tracks. Music used to be stored in Cloud Drive but now the Player will use separate dedicated storage. Your current track...
