Nikon has finally announced their first Android-based Coolpic S800c point and shoot camera. On the camera side, it comes with a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, 10x optical zoom, 1080p video recording with stereo sound, 3.5-inch OLED touchscreen, EXPEED C2 processor, GPS and Wi-Fi. On the Android side, it comes with Android 2.3, Gingerbread pre-installed. You may remember that in yesterday’s article I wrote that it seems unlikely that Nikon would put stock Gingerbread on a camera. Well, turns out there is more to it than that. The S800c has two modes in the software. One is the camera mode, where it behaves like any other Nikon camera with a touchscreen, and the other is the Android mode, where it’s like a mini Android smartphone, complete with all your favorite apps from the Play Store. Nikon Rumors have now published some pictures that are allegedly of this yet to be announced camera. The camera in question looks like your usual point and shooter from the front, until you get to the back where you’ll find a large touchscreen along with the usual physical Android navigation keys. To be honest, something about this picture doesn’t seem right. If Nikon is putting Android on their cameras, something tells me they won’t just put up a stock Android ROM on there, complete with an alarm and music player app, which seem out of place on a camera. Instead, they would probably try to make the UI seem more like their existing cameras while maintaining Android specific features such as image sharing or a web browser, rather than make it look like a generic Android phone’s UI. The first one is the newest member of the Nikon 1 family, which currently includes the V1 and the J1. The J2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera that is mostly similar to the older J1 with minor modifications. It has the same 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor up front in a compact, rangefinder-style body but the display on the back has been upgraded and now has 921k dots in the same 3.0-inch size. The J2 also has a new Creative Mode that lets you add visual effects to your images, a metallic body and comes in a new orange color. The Nikon 1 J2 camera with the 10-30mm lens (27-80mm in 35mm equivalent) will be available in September 2012 for the suggested retail price of $549.95. Polaroid showcased the SC1630 earlier this year at CES and even Samsung is said to have been working on a similar device. Now we are hearing that Nikon too is working on an Android based camera and there is some proof to back that claim as well. This information comes courtesy an Indonesian Communication filing from July 2012 that shows a product named Coolpix S800c (or S800), which is said to be running Android 2.3, Gingerbread. According to Nikon Rumors , the expected features of this camera include a 25-250mm lens, 3.5-inch OLED display, built-in GPS and Wi-Fi. They also say that the camera will run all apps from the Google Play Store, although that seems unlikely. The possible announcement date for this product is said to be August 22.
