NSN: LTE performance matters more than features

In a blogpost over at NSN, Marc Rouanne, EVP of Mobile Broadband at NSN writes about how LTE performance matters much more than the feature set. He agrees with senior analyst of Mobile Access infrastructure, Ed Gibbins and focus less on the feature set. I agree. Features are nice, but if they are not used or add no real value, then they can be worthless. Also, the basics must be in place. If the underlying network is not robust, does not perform well or staggers under heavy load, the add-on features are little help.  At NSN, we believe in the right features built on a platform of performance. As one of the leading LTE vendors, we believe ours are the most reliable LTE networks deployed. For example, back in October 2013 we provided stellar network quality for the Busan Fireworks Festival in South Korea, the most advanced LTE market in the world. The networks of our competitors in the same area collapsed during the event. During the Festival, some 700,000 people sent videos, photos and...

Published by Pino Bonetti on August 17, 2012 We are always very busy updating our mobile apps.  Just recently, for instance, we have released a new version of Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps and Nokia Transport. But mobile apps are only half of the story. In fact, we’re continually updating our web offering so that you can discover new or improved features almost every week. During the past few weeks, we have introduced some cool new features to maps.nokia.com while other improvements have happened under the hood. So let’s have a closer look at what’s changed since the last time we talked about maps.nokia.com. First of all we have introduced more ways to interact with routes and map. Sometimes, in fact, you don’t want to plan a route from A to B, but get a feeling of how far apart two or more places are from another. This is why we have introduced the ruler tool , with which you can measure the straight line distance between two points. And you can also have fun measuring perimeters, like I d...

Microsoft details battery saving and touch features on Windows 8 RT, device sizes

Microsoft is gearing up to launch Windows 8, a version that marks a significant departure from previous incarnations in that it supports ARM processors. The Redmond-based company is quite excited about what it has achieved with Windows 8 RT (that’s what the ARM version is called) and the kind of hardware it and its OEM partners have designed. One of the biggest advantages of ARM over Intel or AMD made x86 processors is energy efficiency. Windows 8 RT was designed to reduce power usage to capitalize on that, but also allow for smaller batteries, which in turn means thinner and lighter gadgets. One of the power-saving features is Connected standby, which is the answer to the dilemma of choosing between putting your computer to sleep or keeping it on to receive notifications. Connected standby is like sleep mode but Windows keeps an active connection and checks for new events. It uses a lot less energy than just keeping the computer on. Here’s some battery life figures of a Windows 8 RT ...

Windows RT to ship with Preview version of Office 2013 RT, loses some features

Posted in: Desktop computers, Mobile software, Windows August 8th, 2012, 10:26 by Prasad It has been known for a while now that Microsoft will be shipping a version of the new Office 2013 with Windows RT and that it will be the only non-Metro application that can be accessed on this particular version of the operating system. Now we are learning that Office 2013 RT, which is to be included on Windows RT will be a watered-down version of the full blown Office 2013 that you will experience on standard Windows 8 or 7. Instead what you will get is the Preview version of the Office 2013 RT pre-installed in Windows RT devices and you will be able to upgrade to the final version, which will come out sometime early next year. So what’s missing in Office RT compared to the full blown Office? The list includes macros, third party add-ons, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) support and some other minor things. Microsoft says that these features have been dropped to ensure better battery life a...
