Video: CNET, “Nokia Lumia Icon has the goods”

CNet have got a quick hands on with the Nokia Lumia ICON – which they describe as a shrunken 5? version of a phone with the capabilities of the Nokia Lumia 1520. The shape and the colour is said to fit Verizon’s more somber shades. The straight edges mean it can stand up on its own. The curve at the back makes it comfortable to hold. 5? but still triple column. Smaller but still tappable. 1080p resolution makes everything very crisp. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqslxzwLrJU Jess finds it a little bit heavy/thick/bland for her taste, but she says you do get that really nice camera and fast processor. BTW, for those finding this ‘heavy’ please compare what they said about the Xperia Z1. Also 5?. The Nokia Lumia ICON weighs in at 167g. The Xperia Z1 weighs 170g. Hands On With The Verizon Nokia Lumia Icon

Due to the inclement weather across the U.S., our Verizon Nokia Lumia Icon review unit arrived a little late, but as they say, better late than never! We’re hard at work on the full review, but just wanted to give you a quick look at Nokia’s latest Lumia device. Not only does the Lumia Icon rock amazing specs, a beefed out camera and a sexy design, it came in a huge 007 like case complete with glowing red LED lights inside the case. Also included are red Nokia Monster PurityPro wireless headphones, which go all the way up to 11. Opening the case up kinda made me feel like Ryan Gosling in Drive. And then I was looking over my shoulder for Cylons. So many emotions. Anyway… As far as specs go, this Windows Phone is a powerhouse. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 runs the show, clocked at an amazing 2.2GHz. The Lumia Icon touts 2 GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory. A 5 inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD OLED display commands attention, and is protected by a layer of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3. The screen...

Microsoft could bring Android app support to Windows, Windows Phone

Software giant 'seriously considering' Android app support, reports The Verge Future Windows Phone handsets and Windows computers could run Android apps, according to a report from The Verge's Tom Warren. Citing unnamed sources, the outlet says Microsoft is "seriously considering" bringing support for Android applications to its Windows and Windows Phone operating systems. While discussions are said to be ongoing within Microsoft, and opinions within the company apparently sharply divided, the move is seen as a possible way for Windows Phone to bridge the so-called "app gap" between with Android and iOS. Warren points out that the ubiquity of Android and its relatively strong library of apps could allow Microsoft to position Android support as a "Band-Aid" for its Windows Phone app woes. The move has echoes of BlackBerry's Android runtime, a feature which in its latest release allows BlackBerry 10 devices to run Android apps alongsid...

Huawei Ascend D3 with 1.8GHz octa-core chip coming soon?

In addition to the Ascend P7, Huawei will also launch the Ascend D3 at some point this year. As far as we (don’t) know, this model could launch from the floor of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona… or not. We do know that the D3 could easily be more powerful than the P7. While the latter is targeting a mainstream audience, the D3 is more of a geeky device with better hardware and not that fancy design. That’s, at least, the way we see things. According to Unwired View, the Ascend D3 could sport Huawei’s own octa-core chip, HiSilicon Kirin 920, clocked at 1.8GHz. This SoC will rely on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, combining four faster (Cortex-A9) with four slower (Cortex-A7) cores. We would like those faster cores to be Cortex-A15, but I guess Huawei is still not there. Other D3 specs apparently include a 16-megapixel camera on the back, 5-inch full HD screen and a 6.3mm-thin body. If this phone is not too expensive, Huawei may have a winner at its hand, one that could easily sell in...

LG G Pro 2 is officially official; Here are 6 things you should know about it

Just as we expected, LG has officially announced the G Pro 2 in Korea. The successor to the Optimus G Pro is one of the best devices ever made, with some features even the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is missing. To help you cut through the clutter, we wanted to highlight the G Pro 2's key selling point. Here 6 things you should know about it: 1. Processor / Memory The G Pro 2 rocks Qualcomm’s potent Snapdragon 800 quad-core chip clocked at 2.26GHz with Adreno 330 graphics and full 3GB of RAM. In addition, it comes with 16 or 32 GB of internal storage that is further expandable with microSD cards. 2. Screen This big boy packs a 5.9-inch full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display with slim bezel of just 3.3mm. This in turn provides the industry-leading screen-to-frame ratio of 77.2 percent! 3. Sound Compared to its predecessor, the G Pro 2 is 30% louder. LG managed to achieve this by using a thicker, high-power 1W Hi-Fi speaker that promises to deliver “clearer sound with more powerful bass.” We c...

Xiaomi Hongmi to be known as Xiaomi Redmi outside of China

Xiaomi’s wildly popular Hongmi smartphone is going beyond the boundaries of China. But users in other countries won’t see it selling with that name, which translates to Red Rice. Instead, the firm has opted for another (though rather similar) name – Redmi. Now, we don’t know Xiaomi’s expansion plans, but we do know they’re heading to Singapore, among other places. And for other markets, they’re best of having names local population understands better. That said, we’re not sure whether the Chinese firm’s renaming plans will also include their flagship offering, Mi3 and Mi4, which should be announced later this year. Anyhow, we’ll be on the lookout for any news coming from Xiaomi and get back to you as soon as we have something new to add. Meanwhile, expect to see the Xiaomi Redmi popping up at phone importers all around the web. Inforgraph: Actual Screen Size Vs. Bezel

Considering how Nokia haven’t had the best track record when it comes to properly utilizing screen real estate, here’s an interesting infographic showing how each phone compares in terms of actual display to bezel percentage. The Lumia 1520 does pretty good at 71.2%, only a few percentages bellow the LG G2 which has a full width screen with no side bezel; and I must admit the proper space utilization on the 1520 is great, as it keeps the actual phone size to a minimum (well as minimum as possible when you’re dealing with a 6? screen). The Lumia 1320 also fares quite well with an acceptable 70.25, however after that it gets pretty horrible, with the 920 at 60.4% and the 1020 at 59.8% (thank god the Lumia 800 isn’t up there). Hopefully with WP 8.1 and its on screen buttons we’ll see less and less bezel, and more screen utilization; something I’m sure many of you would appreciate (although I fear the toll on durability of devices would take a hit). Sony Xperia SP Android 4.3 update rolling out as we speak, in some markets at least

Sony has started rolling out Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update to users in some markets, namely Malaysia and Australia. At the moment, the new software (version 12.1.A.0.266) isn’t available over the air, and you’ll rather have to use Sony’s PC Companion desktop software to download and install it to your phone. That’s not the problem considering all the goodies you’ll get in return. These include the fancy white UI seen in other Sony smartphones that run Android 4.3, a new Sony Smart Camera and Sony media apps, new downloadable Xperia themes and wallpapers, a new launcher, as well as a number of performance improvements that make the UI feel a lot smoother. We’ve no idea when the Japanese company will bring the same update to other parts of the world and can only hope this will be a short wait. In addition, we’re hoping Sony will allow this process to be conducted over the air rather than requiring their infamous desktop software… [Via: XperiaGuide, UnwiredView] Dusan has been using sma...

Android apps coming to Windows Phones?

There’s a weird rumor going around the Interwebs, suggesting that Microsoft may allow Android apps to run on Windows Phones. Something like that would quickly increase the app count for Microsoft’s mobile platform, but there are downsides as well. For one thing, this could entice developers to skip “regular” native development for Windows Phone. It’s a tricky choice. On one hand, the Redmond giant could benefit in the short term to have all those Android apps and games available on Windows Phone handsets. On the other hand, they could pretty much face extinction from the mobile game, with Windows Phone pretty much turning into yet another Android launcher. So no, we don’t think Microsoft will allow this to happen. At the same time, it may not stop other companies from pursuing this opportunity. Think BlueStacks, the company that already allows Android apps to run on Windows computers. Perhaps these same guys/gals can enable the same functionality on Windows Phones. We doubt the Redmon...

This is the easiest way to transfer media files from a smartphone/tablet to computer

Just the other day, SanDisk unveiled a neat little device that will make moving of media files from a smartphone or tablet to computer as seamless as possible. The SanDisk Ultra Dual USB Drive comes with a regular USB port on one hand, and a microUSB one – on the other. So when you want to move some files from your mobile device, simply connect the SanDisk’s device to a microUSB port and copy all the photos and videos you want. Then, connect the same device using a regular USB port to a computer and make a local copy of those files. Pretty easy, right? The best part is that the drive’s dual USB ports feature a retractable cover, meaning no caps to lose while still keeping the connectors safe. Yeah, I know – you could rely on some cloud-based storage service to accomplish the same thing, but this is much faster. Or so I think. The only problem is – whether you want to buy yet another device. If you do want it, you can get it in capacities ranging from 16GB to 64GB. The entry-level mode...

Video: Hot rods, hot chick, Drag Race: Nokia Lumia Icon Vs. Samsung Galaxy S4

As part of the Nokia Lumia Icon launch, NokiaUS have released a video that compares the Samsung Galaxy SIV audio against that from the quadmic Rich Recording Nokia Lumia Icon. Note how the video quality looks in the Nokia Lumia Icon. It appears to have gone back to the ‘Purer’ more natural colours vs the high saturation we’re used to with Lumia and other competitors. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMT442XIfjo Just the Icon audio. Another promo for the Nokia Lumia Icon that’s just been launched today. Video & Gallery: Nokia Lumia 1320 Unboxing and Impressions

Along with the super-specced and super-large Lumia 1520 comes a second phablet, one that’s a bit more reasonable in terms of specs; making it more affordable, the Nokia Lumia 1320. This is our unboxing. The Lumia 1320, similar to the 1520 is a 6? beast, with a 720 p display instead of the Full HD 1080p one in the 1520, the 1320 clocks out with a ppi of 245, which is acceptable for the intended price-range of the device. The screen is an LCD IPS Gorilla glass 3 display, with Nokia’s amazing Clear Black display, meaning what it lacks in pixels it makes up for in actual display quality.  Inside the Lumia 1320 is well equipped to deal with the featherweight requests of Windows Phone, with a Dual core 1.7 Ghz Snapdragon S4 processor and 1 Gb of ram it essentially has the same processor as the Lumia 920 (which has a 1.5 GHz S4).  The 1320 has pretty much the same size and dimensions as the 1520, also sharing the same weight range (220 grams), meaning if you’re comfortable with one, you’ll ...
