Google acquires Boston Dynamics, maker of some of today’s coolest robots

Google is entering the robotics market, big time. What we used to know as search giant may soon turn into an overall giant, spanning a number of industries while trying to make our lives easier. As part of that mission, the Mountain View-based corporation acquired Boston Dynamics, the firm behind such cool robots as Big Dog, PETMAN and WildCat, all of which were made for the Department of Defense. Now we’re sure Google doesn’t want to stop those government contracts, but we would also like to believe they want to bring robots to our homes, helping us with mundane tasks. We have hard time imagining the use cases at the moment, but we’re sure the G-folks know what they’re up to. Although the financial details of the deal were not disclosed we doubt this was a cheap buy, quite the contrary; and in that sense we can’t wait to see the first G-bots hitting the streets. In the meantime, check out one of the coolest robots we’ve seen to date – the Wild Cat. [Via: AndroidCentral] Dusan has be...

Google purchases robotics firm Boston Dynamics

Are you ready for super-evil robots that will take over the planet in some sort of cybernetic revolt? I sure am. We probably won't see maniacal robo-wargs that will swoop in and destroy all humans, but if we ever do, the two companies that could make it happen just got cozy. Google has announced that they have purchased Boston Dynamics , creators of terror the Big Dog and PETMAN , for an undisclosed sum. I'll speculate that it was 100 Billion Dollars . Not really. All jokes aside, Boston Dynamics have the knack to make robots that are agile, strong and sturdy instead of fragile pieces of metal that need coddling. The kind of robots that could do stuff instead of just look pretty in a lab. Check out the WildCat  — and hope it never chases you. What does this mean? We have no idea. Andy Rubin is Google's new robot overlord, so I imagine he has some sort of plan for this. We can only hope that it's peaceful. Source: NYT read more
