Review: Mini review: Google Play Music All Access

Google's entered the streaming world with a bang back at its I/O conference in May 2013. Google Play Music All Access was launched as a music streaming service with a difference. The name might be a mouthful, but All Access offers a few extra features than you'd normally see in a search-and-stream service. It aims to marry the wealth of music you already have downloaded, with a world of on-demand, streamable music, creating a single product that can serve up tunes in any manner you fancy. With Napster, Deezer, Pandora and of course Spotify as direct competitors, Google Play Music All Access has its work cut out. Google has even matched its competitors for price and the service costs £9.99/$9.99 per month. But how does it stack up? Let's get playing. Google Play Music All Access review The catalogue Google hasn't released the official figure for the amount of tracks on Google Play Music All Access, which may lead the cynical among you to presume that it's lagging be...

Nokia Music launches in the US

Published by Ian Delaney on September 4, 2012 Today, we’re delighted to announce that the Nokia Music service has launched for US customers. American Lumia owners will be able to download the Nokia Music app from the Nokia Collection in the Marketplace. And it will come preloaded on Nokia Lumia 900 and 710 smartphones. Of its many virtues, the best part of Nokia Music is undoubtedly Nokia Mix Radio: we’re enormous fans of the service here on Conversations and have written about it several times before. If you missed those posts, the killer features of Mix Radio are the ability to create playlists from your own tastes, or select from hundreds of specially curated mixes drawn from the Nokia Music collection of over 17 million tracks. What’s more, you can download these playlists over WiFi to listen to anywhere, without needing any further data connection. You can catch all the action around Nokia Music on the @Music_Nokia Twitter channel. View the original article here

Movie music: The 7 greatest film scores ever

Most amazing movies have amazing music. But which scores are the best of the bunch? Music has always been at the heart of the movie industry. Even at the Lumiere brothers’ first film screening in 1895, there was a pianist tinkling the ivories. Twenty years later, Fritz Lang’s classic silent film, Metropolis, was accompanied by an original full scale orchestral score. Now, thanks to the wonders of modern mobile tech, we can enjoy movies and their music, wherever and whenever we want. But if you had to choose a play list, which would you go for? The composer’s criteria We asked composer Douglas Black Heaton which scores he thought deserved the title of greatest ever. His criteria: They had to be popular, influential and a damn good listen. They had to be composed scores, rather than soundtracks of songs, and each composer had to be different. So without further ado, here’s his magnificent seven. Psycho 1960 Bernard Hermann’s unsettling string score for Hitchcock’s masterpiece is never ...

How to set up music playlists on your Lumia

It is one of the greatest debates in popular music: Would The Beatles’ White Album be better as a single LP? Plus, when did you last listen to Revolution 9 in its entirety, anyway? I love Liverpool’s Fab Four as much as the next man, but even they are not immune from the mighty power of the playlist phenomenon. Digital music has made it possible for us to select our favourite songs from our favourite artists, programme a collection of songs to suit a particular mood and, yes, even to remove tracks and play with the running order of classic albums. It is possible to create playlists on your Lumia handset, without your PC but I would advise against this. Doing it with Zune on your PC is much more flexible. This is especially true if you have a large collection of music – it will just be easier to pick out the songs you want. First you will need to create the playlist on Zune before synchronising it to your Lumia. Open Zune on your PCGo to your Collection , where all your music, videos, ...
