Hands-on review: Philips Brilliance 288P Ultra HD 4K 28-inch monitor

Ultra HD 4K screens are in healthy supply at CES 2014 but super high-resolution monitors, however, are comparatively few and far between. Luckily, picking up the slack, there was Philips' Brilliance 288P Ultra HD 4K monitor. We met up with Philips to check out its latest 28-inch 4K addition that offers PC gamers and users a 3840 x 2160 resolution. Philips also boasted that the Ultra HD set features 10-bit color panel, 2-bits more than most other screens. Fixing the TN panel We were a bit shocked when a Philips PR rep told us the monitor was a TN panel. Classically these fast response time monitors are tuned for lag free gaming, sacrificing good color and viewing angles. The Philips Brilliance 288P isn't hindered by either of these issues. Colors are deep and rich, it's still not the most vibrant color gamut we've ever seen on a 4K display, but it's definitely a step up from the washed out hues usually seen on TN panels. However, we can't say much about the bla...

Philips Xenium W9588 now available in China for whopping $823

It seems there’s a subset of users in China who can’t imagine owning a non-clamshell smartphone. Samsung has thus far served this community best and now Phillips wants a bigger slice of the pie. The newly launched Xenium W9588 isn’t exactly an easy sell, quite the contrary. It’s a super-expensive mid-range smartphone with specs that include a pair of 3.5-inch 854×480 touchscreens, MediaTek’s MT6589 1.2GHz quad-core chip, 1GB of RAM, 8-megapixel camera on the back, and 4GB of expandable memory. All this is sold for whopping 4,999 Yuan, the amount that translates into some $823. Yeah, you should be able to get a much better phone for that money so we’re not really sure who in the world would want to get the Xenium W9588 over something much better; something like HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4 or LG G2. You *really* need to love the clamshell form factor to get Philips’ baby instead of something else. And no, we’re not sure whether the W9588 will ever be released in the West… and honestly, w...

Review: Philips 65PFL9708

Introduction Philips isn't generally associated with aggressive value - at least when you're talking about the upper reaches of its TV range. But in a startlingly bold move the brand is selling its first 4K/UHD TV - the 65PLF9708S - for a price that undercuts all of its 65-inch 4K/UHD TV rivals. And not just by a pound or two, either; it's £500 cheaper than the Sony KDL-65X9005A and Samsung UE65F9000 ( read the 55-inch review here ) 4K TVs, and a whole grand cheaper than the Panasonic L65WT600 , Toshiba 65L9363 and LG 65LA970W . That we're seeing such price differentiation so early in 4K's life bodes well for the format becoming 'mainstream' sooner rather than later. However, it also raises concerns that Philips has had to serve up a fairly stripped-back TV to make the 65PFL9708S's price achievable. Thankfully, these concerns prove unfounded, as its 4K native resolution is actually backed up by many eye-catching tricks and treats including Philips...
