Review: Mini Review: Netgear Push2TV PTV3000

£69.99 We're keeping more and more of our media on our portable laptops, tablets and smartphones, but sometimes nothing can beat watching a Hollywood movie on your big screen TV. The Netgear Push2TV PTV3000 is designed to be able to stream your media from compatible devices and broadcast them in high definition on any device with an HDMI-in port. Unlike devices such as the Cables to Go TruLink Wireless HDMI Kit and the HP Wireless TV Connect Kit , the Netgear Push2TV PTV3000 uses Intel WiDi and Miracast technology that's built into your device to wirelessly transmit video. This means that you don't need two bulky devices hanging out of either end of the stream (one for your mobile device and one for your TV). You just need the one box, which can sit unobtrusively behind your TV. It can be powered from USB or (with an included adapter) from the mains power supply, which is useful. Annoyingly, an HDMI cable is not included, so you'll need to buy one before you hook it u...

Get your new Kindle Fire HDX and pay for it over time with Amazon's new installment plan

Four equal payments and no hidden fees make for a great way to get a new Kindle HDX We've talked about the Kindle Fire HDX tablets before . If you're looking for a great way to consume content from Amazon — that means music, books, movies, audiobooks, the web and apps — there is no better way. They have displays to die for, are absolutely fluid and smooth because of the Snapdragon 800 inside them, deliver great sound and are built well. They aren't a typical Android tablet in any way, but no tablet from any company is better for reading or watching video.  And now, you can get them on four payments. Amazon has a new deal where you pay one installment to get your Kindle HDX , then pay three more 90 days apart. Each installment is 25 percent of the total plus tax for the same exact Kindle as if you paid it all up front. The $229 7-inch version will cost $57.25 every 90 days, and the $379 8.9-inch version comes in at $94.75 per installment. There are no finance charges,...

Through Glass: The distraction factor

The latest our new weekly series about living with Google Glass comes from our own Jerry Hildenbrand, a neckbearded riddle wrapped in a West Virginia enigma.? Google Glass is no more distracting than your phone, nor is it any less We all know that if you get caught speeding upwards of 20 mph over the speed limit and you're wearing Google Glass , you're going to get at least one ticket. And you should. Piloting 8,000 pounds of metal traveling at high speeds is a responsibility you shouldn't take lightly. While very few are complaining about the speeding ticket that was issued in the example above, a good many people are outraged that the driver wearing Google Glass was mentioned on the citation. I'm here to say the unpopular opinion — it should be mentioned. read more

Nine minutes on SIM unlocking your smartphone

A bit of big (albeit nerdy) news last week came from the FCC and CTIA, wherein the governmental entity in charge of all those public airwaves and the wireless industry's advocacy group announced a set of standards for allowing us (the customers) to SIM unlock our phones. Theoretically, that's a big deal because removing those locks is the first step in being able to use any phone on any network here in the United States. But as we talked about on our most recent podcast , it's maybe more a symbolic victory than anything else. Technical hurdles still remain. Have a listen. read more

Review: Updated: HTC Desire 500

Introduction HTC offers a mean flagship, in the form of the HTC One . But the firm knows that a lot of the mobile market now lies in the budget sector, and this is where the HTC Desire 500 is pitched. It might not have the super low price of the ZTE Blade V , but even so, the price is hardly going to make your eyes water. This puts the Desire 500 in direct competition with the Sony Xperia M and the Nokia Lumia 625 , and just a little more costly than the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini . It's also worth considering the cheaper Moto G here, which sports a deceptively low price for its feature set. So has HTC equipped the Desire 500 with the necessary weapons to beat an increasingly difficult market? It packs Qualcomm's Snapdragon 200 processor, backed up with 1GB RAM. This means that the Desire 500 might not pack the biggest punch, but the 1.2GHz quad-core chip is hardly a slouch. While the Desire 500 does boast a 4.3-inch screen, it's unfortunately only 480 x 800, meaning a rather...
