Samsung is now mass producing the industry’s first 128-gigabyte (GB) ultra-fast embedded memory based on the much-anticipated Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 standard for next-generation flagship smartphones. The new embedded memory’s UFS 2.0 interface is the most advanced JEDEC-compliant, next-generation flash memory storage specification in the world. “With our mass production of ultra-fast UFS memory of the industry’s highest capacity, we are making a significant contribution to enable a more advanced mobile experience for consumers,” said Jee-ho Baek, Senior Vice President of Memory Marketing, Samsung Electronics. “In the future, we will increase the proportion of high-capacity memory solutions, in leading the continued growth of the premium memory market.” UFS memory utilizes “Command Queue,” a technology that accelerates the speed of command execution in SSDs through a serial interface, significantly increasing data processing speeds compared to the 8-bit parallel-interface-ba...

Lollipop update for the first Moto X is in the works, coming soon

Motorola brought Lollipop to all of its current Moto smartphones but the first-gen Moto X is still left hanging. Sure, the Moto E is yet to taste Android Lollipop, but the testing processes has already begun, which means its update is ready. What happens to the original Moto X then? Motorola has decided to answer this bugging questions over Twitter. Apparently, the Lollipop update for the Moto X is still in development and Motorola is working on fixing compatibility issues with the SoC. The first Moto X runs on the Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset with dual-core 1.7GHz Krait processor, Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM. It seems the vanilla Lollipop is facing some issues with the hardware and requires further tweaking. Anyway, Motorola doesn't want to give any promises for release dates, but it assure its Moto X users that all hands are on deck for the update and it will roll out as soon as possible. BQ Aquaris E4.5 is the first Ubuntu phone, launches next week

The ever elusive 'Ubuntu phone' concept is finally about to become reality. After the failed Ubuntu Edge campaign, Canonical (the company behind the OS) turned to partnerships with mobile device makers in order to get its software into the hands of consumers. We've been hearing that the first Ubuntu phone will launch soon for a very long time now, but that's actually going to happen next week, believe it or not. That said, the first Ubuntu smartphone will be anything but a flagship. Meet the BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition. It's basically got the exact same hardware as the already available BQ Aquaris E4.5, only that runs Android. Hence the "Ubuntu Edition" moniker. The phone has a 4.5-inch 540x960 touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash, and a 5 MP front-facing one. Powering things up is a MediaTek chipset with a 1.3 GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 processor, aided by 1GB of RAM. Internal storage is 8GB, and the handset comes with dual-SIM support. ...

Love at first sight with the Nokia 808 PureView

The founder of the PureView Club website Marc Wielaert talks to Nokia Conversations We all know that the Nokia 808 PureView made quite a splash when it was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year.  Almost immediately, the blogosphere became smitten with its 41-megapixel sensor, cutting edge optics and advanced algorithms that produced images on a par, if not better, than digital SLR cameras. Marc Wielaert is an enthusiastic blogger from Hilversum in the Netherlands, who runs the smartphone-review.nl website and he was in attendance at Barcelona for the launch. It’s fair to say that the 808 PureView made quite an impression on him as well. In fact, Marc, who has been using and testing camera phones for over decade, became so infatuated with the device that he set up a website dedicated to spreading the word about PureView technology. The PureView Club, run by Marc and his webmaster Peter Buijsman, has now been going for a couple of months and already boasts...

Posted in: Fun stuff July 31st, 2012, 18:13 by Kyle MGM released a teaser of the new Bond movie last May. We recently saw Daniel Craig land with a parachute at the Olympics opening event and visitors were treated with a 30-second teaser for Skyfall. Now here is the official trailer. As you probably know MGM barely survived a bankruptcy and it’s now good to see it back in action with the 007 movies. 007 Skyfall premiere is scheduled for the end of October – just in time for the 50th anniversary of the first Bond movie ever made. Galaxy Ace and Gio become the first ARMv6 smartphones to get CM10 ports

Posted in: Android, Mobile phones, Mobile software July 25th, 2012, 12:02 by Chip Manufacturers are still taking their time with the official Jelly Bean updates, but the guys over at XDA-developers have been quite busy porting the latest Android distribution to various smartphones and already have quite a lot to show for their efforts. The most recent achievement of the indie dev community is quite impressive though. The Samsung Galaxy Ace and Gio – two smartphones based on the older-gen ARMv6 CPU – got CM10 ports, which will certainly be their only chance of tasting Jelly Bean. While the ROMs are still in the early alpha stages of their development, they already have support for most of the two smartphone’s hardware. They are some way off from being ready for everyday duties, but at least they give you a preview of what’s to come. You can find more about the Gio CM10 port here, while the page for the Galaxy Ace ROM is over here. A hat tip to Tejas Jain for sending this in! View the ...

Canon officially announces the EOS M, their first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera

A few days ago we reported about the leaked image of the then unannounced Canon EOS M camera. This was to be the first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera from the company and was supposed to be announced on July 23. And just as expected, here comes the full announcement from Canon. As with other cameras of this kind, Canon is boasting about the existence of a DSLR size sensor and the ability to change lenses in a relatively compact camera that you can carry around with you every where. They are also targeting the everyday photographers with this camera, that is, the people you see going around clicking pictures of things usually with their mobile phone cameras, but with this they can do the same with much better results. The Canon EOS M uses an 18 megapixel APS-C sensor that is based on the sensor from the EOS-650D. The EOS M is launched alongside two new lenses, the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM pancake and the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom that are based on Canon’s new smaller...
