Samsung loses its position as India's top smartphone vendor

Just a few days after market research firm Counterpoint noted that Samsung actually lost its title of the world?s leading smartphone vendor in Q4, 2014, it is being reported that the South Korean company has been dethroned in the Indian smartphone market, too. According to a report from market research firm Canalys, with 22% of the market share in Q4 last year, local budget brand Micromax has now become the top smartphone vendor in the country, ahead of Samsung at 20%. The Indian company already overtook the South Korean firm as the leading brand in all types of mobile phones last year. "This incredible performance is partly due to Micromax?s continuing appeal to mobile phone users upgrading to smart phones," the report said. "Its flagship line of products has also very effectively targeted the US$150 to US$200 (INR9,000 to INR12,000) segment, with products such as the Canvas Nitro and Canvas Hue." The third and the fourth spots were also claimed by Indian companie...

Nine minutes on SIM unlocking your smartphone

A bit of big (albeit nerdy) news last week came from the FCC and CTIA, wherein the governmental entity in charge of all those public airwaves and the wireless industry's advocacy group announced a set of standards for allowing us (the customers) to SIM unlock our phones. Theoretically, that's a big deal because removing those locks is the first step in being able to use any phone on any network here in the United States. But as we talked about on our most recent podcast , it's maybe more a symbolic victory than anything else. Technical hurdles still remain. Have a listen. read more

Groupon offers great deals for Nokia Lumia and Nokia Belle smartphone owners

If you’re always on the look out for a bargain, then let your phone do the hard work for you by using the Groupon app on your Nokia Lumia and Nokia Belle smartphone. Groupon is a company that advertises retailer services, products or other listings on behalf of a supplier. These deals are usually much lower than they’d normally advertise, ranging anywhere from 50 to 90 per cent off the recommended retail price (RRP). They can do this because they rely on the fact that when these deals are offered, people in vast amounts will snap up these deals, ultimately making a profit for the company offering the goods. For the company, selling 200 marked-down items is better than only selling a few of the same full-priced items. Plus, they’re more likely to get repeat business as a result. Screenshots of Groupon from a Nokia Lumia 800 On your Nokia Lumia and Nokia Belle smartphone, you first start by signing in, or creating an account if you haven’t got one.
