BQ Aquaris E4.5 is the first Ubuntu phone, launches next week

The ever elusive 'Ubuntu phone' concept is finally about to become reality. After the failed Ubuntu Edge campaign, Canonical (the company behind the OS) turned to partnerships with mobile device makers in order to get its software into the hands of consumers. We've been hearing that the first Ubuntu phone will launch soon for a very long time now, but that's actually going to happen next week, believe it or not. That said, the first Ubuntu smartphone will be anything but a flagship. Meet the BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition. It's basically got the exact same hardware as the already available BQ Aquaris E4.5, only that runs Android. Hence the "Ubuntu Edition" moniker. The phone has a 4.5-inch 540x960 touchscreen, an 8 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash, and a 5 MP front-facing one. Powering things up is a MediaTek chipset with a 1.3 GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 processor, aided by 1GB of RAM. Internal storage is 8GB, and the handset comes with dual-SIM support. ...

Microsoft could bring Android app support to Windows, Windows Phone

Software giant 'seriously considering' Android app support, reports The Verge Future Windows Phone handsets and Windows computers could run Android apps, according to a report from The Verge's Tom Warren. Citing unnamed sources, the outlet says Microsoft is "seriously considering" bringing support for Android applications to its Windows and Windows Phone operating systems. While discussions are said to be ongoing within Microsoft, and opinions within the company apparently sharply divided, the move is seen as a possible way for Windows Phone to bridge the so-called "app gap" between with Android and iOS. Warren points out that the ubiquity of Android and its relatively strong library of apps could allow Microsoft to position Android support as a "Band-Aid" for its Windows Phone app woes. The move has echoes of BlackBerry's Android runtime, a feature which in its latest release allows BlackBerry 10 devices to run Android apps alongsid...

Video: Keyboard typing tips for Windows Phone

I thought I knew the WP keyboard quite well but I didn’t know about the swipe numbers thing (or perhaps forgotten it :/). It’s similar to swiping quick symbols when holding and ‘swyping’ to another punctuation but from the numbers end. But actually works better as you don’t have to ‘wait and hold’ you just press and drag. Pretty cool. BTW, the dedicated .com button. Without changing to a US language on my phone, how do I change my .co.uk button to .com? I rarely visit .co.uk addresses. WPCentral Category : Nokia Hey, thanks for reading my post. Bluebird OEM brings rugged device that can run Android or Windows Phone

Interesting news from Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet. This ruggedized handset from Korean manufacturer, Bluebird has the ability to run both Android or Windows Phone. the devices look identical except for the buttons below (which I’m assuming you choose beforehand AT THE STORE other than it modifying as you switch  OS?). The main point it seems is that the manufacturer pretty much just designs one phone. These are targeted at enterprise customers. Imagine if Nokia Normandy could perhaps dual boot? WP and Android share a back button. WP and Android can also accommodate onscreen buttons. Cheers Alvester for the tip. Category : Lumia, Nokia Hey, thanks for reading my post. Windows Phone Store now counts more than 200,000 apps

Windows Phone Store has recently passed 200,000 apps, and is now seeing more than 12 million “transactions” per day. We’re not sure what these “transactions” mean and can only think of them as downloads, or combination of paid downloads and in-app purchases. In a post on the Windows Phone Developer Blog, director of the Windows Phone apps team Todd Brix said the company is “already seeing momentum build” in the Store, driven by promotions and the run-up to Christmas. As part of this momentum-building strategy, Microsoft has recently introduced gift cards to encourage users to discover and purchase apps on their new devices. In addition, the Redmond giant has also established more direct billing relationships with operators to boost uptake in markets where credit card penetration is low. According to Brix, there are now 51 operator connections in 31 markets for direct billing, “substantially more than any other smartphone platform”. The company has seen a six-fold increase in transacti...

Microsoft to pay Samsung $1 billion to make Windows Phone devices?

Microsoft may soon end-up owning Nokia, but it doesn’t want to be the only game in (Windows Phone) town. Rather, it wants a live eco-system, consisting of a number of different handset makers from all around the world. And if it really wants to succeed – it should corner Samsung. And that’s exactly what it’s apparently trying to do. According to Mobile-Review’s Eldar Murtazin, the Redmond giant is offering $1 billion to the Korean giant so it continues to make Windows Phone devices. This, of course, is still a rumor but it does make a lot of sense. If Microsoft wants to stay relevant in the mobile game, it *must* have the world’s biggest phone maker on its side. The problem, however, is how to convince someone who makes a majority of its money from a competing platform (Android) while also working on its own operating system (Tizen). Then again, no matter how much money Sammy is making these days, an additional billion dollars could help it further improve its standing. The upcoming C...

Windows Phone 8 emulator confirms rumored built-in screenshot feature

Posted in: Windows Phone July 29th, 2012, 13:47 by Kyle Many people were unhappy with the Windows Phone 7 lack of native screenshot capture support. It wasn’t the WP7’s deal breaker, but still it was a feature the competition was offering for quite some time. It seems Microsoft took the complaints seriously and Windows Phone 8 has native support for taking screenshots. The Windows Phone 8 emulator confirmed we will be able to take screenshots on the new Window Phones. It’s done by pressing the Start and the Camera keys, just as rumored (F2 and F7 in the emulator). The shots are saved in a dedicated Screenshots folder in the Picture Hub. We, as reviewers, are really happy to see this feature implemented into the WP8. We are sure developers would also appreciate it. But what about you, the regular users? Source • Via View the original article here
