Moto E and Moto Maxx getting Lollipop for real

Soak test over, now the Motorola Moto E is getting Lollipop for real. Joining the entry level handset is the flagship Motorola Moto Maxx. The Moto E update got a quick soak test in Brazil and India, while the Moto Maxx was tested in Brazil again and in Mexico. Motorola hasn?t opened the floodgates though, the updates are continuing to roll out slowly to small test groups at first. If everything goes well, the update will expand to more users. Moto E users should check that the Motorola Update Services on their phone is the latest version. It's on the Play Store so go do that while you wait for Android 5.0 Lollipop to come around. Both Moto G generations have already received the update, as has the second-gen Moto X. The original Moto X is still waiting though, it turns out that unique chipset is slowing things down. T-Mobile HTC One (M8) is now getting Lollipop OTA

HTC seems to be keeping busy with updates to its current device lineup. Presumably the goal is to push Android 5.0 to as many capable devices as possible before this year's MWC event and the announcements it is going to bring. Now there is a mission we can definitely get behind. Unsurprisingly HTC's One (M8) flagship device is a top priority and has been seeing a lot of Lollipop love lately. After the unlocked and Developer editions received the update and soon after that EU units and Sprint ones it is now time for T-Mobile's own ranks to get the much anticipated OTA. Just as promised T-Mobile One (M8) units have started receiving update notices. The update is naturally staged so if you happen to own a T-Mobile unit be sure to check regularly as the package is on the way. Besides the obvious aesthetic overhaul that Android 5.0 brings to the HTC there is also the matter of performance improvements. We have taken the liberty of retesting a few of our available smartphones w...

First-gen Snapdragon devices not getting CyanogenMod’s IceCream Sandwich

Posted in: Android, Mobile phones, Mobile software 13 hours ago by Ian The popular CyanogenMod ROM modding scene has officially dropped support for a wide array of devices running on the dated Snapdragon S1 chipset. This means that devices running on the Qualcomm QSD8x50, MSM7x25, MSM7x27 and MSM7x27T SoCs will not see any builds beyond Cyanogen 7.x, which is based on Gingerbread. Or in plain words, no Ice Cream Sandwich by CyanogenMod. The more popular devices which fall into the above criteria include the Nexus One, HTC Desire, HTC EVO 4G, Samsung Galaxy Ace and the LG Optimus One. The Cyanogen team cite a lack of media libraries, compatible with ICS, as well as the workarounds required to make Android 4.x+ work do not result in a smooth-running experience. Simply put, the hardware just isn’t there. The full list of devices dropped is: If you own one of the above devices, not all hope is lost, as the team promises to revisit the topic if a solution presents itself that allows the d...

Getting podcasts on your Nokia Lumia

Until you’ve actually done it, it might not be entirely obvious that your Nokia Lumia has a fully-functional, built-in podcast player that does a great job of playing episodes, keeping your podcasts up-to-date and also getting rid of content that’s out-of-date. You’ll find your podcasts under the ‘Music + Videos’ tile. But of course, you’ll have to subscribe to some before you can join the fun. The key to using it on a Windows PC is Microsoft Zune. You may already have set up Zune to synchronise a playlist of your favourite tunes. What you may not have realised is that you set up podcasts separately from regular playlists. When you go to the podcast section in Zune, you can see what you’re already subscribed to, and also add a new subscription. To do, this you will need the feed address of the podcast, also described as its RSS. Click ‘add a new podcast’ at the bottom of the screen and enter the address in the box that appears. For each podcast, you can determine how many episodes you...

Mobile video views are getting huge, with tablets consuming over 36 minutes each week

As our love of mobile devices grows, it really shouldn’t come as a surprise to see that we’re also consuming more media via those smaller screens. But when you start digging into the numbers, the actual amount that we’re preferring to use them is somewhat staggering. The folks over at Direct Sat TV have commissioned a study based on Nielsen numbers and there are some rather surprising finds. For instance, while Hulu might be all the rage, it’s still far below Bing and even Yahoo in the amount of videos served per month. YouTube is the undisputed king, but our love of music keeps pushing Vevo higher up the charts. View the original article here
