Apps of the Week: Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Division Cell, Weather Underground and more!

Another full list of games and tools to try this weekend Another week is behind us, and that means it's time to cap it off with another Apps of the Week post. Each week we take up a slot of time on Saturday afternoon to list an app that each of the folks here at Android Central have been using, and give a little explanation of why it's something we use. Not every app will be new or buzz-worthy, but if we're using it, we're going to tell you about it. This week's list has a few different games (what else is the weekend for?) highlighted by another weather app that may just hit the spot for you. Read along with us after the break and see how the list stacks up. read more

Two weather apps take their place in the sun

A few weeks ago I attempted to assess some weather apps for the Nokia Lumia to identify, not necessarily, the best apps but ones with unique features that made them stand out. Nevertheless, many of you were quick to point out that I had made a glaring omission in not considering the Weather Flow and Weather View apps. I’m sure after this post many of you will be recommending other weather apps as well! As I said, in my first post it’s all about personal preference and having a choice is a good thing. Most of all, it is great that you are eager to share your tips and are so vocal about your favourite apps.  So, in that spirit and to help make amends for not including them in the first post, here is a belated appraisal of Weather Flow and Weather View. Weather Flow As I installed and started using Weather Flow, two things struck me.  Firstly – and in my defence – it’s easy to see why it was initially overlooked. There is nothing novel about the app and neither does it come packed with f...

Weather Channel app for Lumia gets a major redesign and new features

We’re happy to announce a new version of The Weather Channel app only for your Nokia Lumia with a re-vamped look and feel, unique social weather tie-ins with the People Hub and some other really cool features.  All weather apps can provide weather data such as temperature, current conditions and a forecast for the coming days. The new Weather Channel app does this extremely well, in fact, the entire application has been re-designed to bring the most important data up front to the app user. However, it’s the new social features that set this weather app apart.  First, let’s look at My Friends Weather – Import your top 5 Facebook friends and see how weather is affecting your friends and family. Is a storm headed towards your mom? Text, email or call her right from the app. Ready to waterski at your best friend’s lake house? Know the weather before they do and invite yourself for a visit. Social Weather Alerts – if there is a breaking weather event for your social network, you’ll be the...

Seeing through the clouds: The ultimate weather app for your Nokia Lumia

Regularly checking the weather forecast is one of the great joys of owning a smartphone. After all, I’m British and cognizance of the weather is necessary for polite interaction with the rest of the society.  Plus, it’s a lot more fun than looking out of the window. However, judging by the number of weather apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace, Britain is not the only nation obsessed with the weather.  There are localised weather apps for countries as far flung as Hong Kong, Australia, Estonia, Thailand, Canada and many more.  Different but the same   Actually, most weather apps allow you to choose several locations so that you can keep an eye on forecasts in cities all over the world, whether there is a local app or not. Other common features shared by many of the apps include: Snapshot of the current day’s weatherThe day’s maximum and minimum day/night temperatureLong-range forecastsChoice between Fahrenheit and CelsiusWind speedsUV index forecastsSunrise and sunset timesWeather ma...

Google’s in-browser weather feature comes to tablets

If you search for weather forecasts and conditions fairly often on your smartphone you might have noticed how Google displays the latest conditions depending on your location right in the browser itself. It has now extended this nifty addition to tablet browsers as well. Web weather works entirely in the browser and can be brought in the exact same way as on smartphones. Do ensure that GPS is enabled on your tablet and then type out weather on Google.com. You will be presented with a 10-day forecast along with temperature, precipitation, humidity and wind-speed information. The tool is entirely interactive and you can slide along the timeline to see more information.
