Samsung’s Galaxy S III surpasses 10 million sales in less than two months

Samsung’s newest Android flagship smartphone — the Galaxy S III — has surpassed 10 million sales in less than two months after going on sale, selling at a rate predicted by the company just last month, Samsung president Shin Jong-kyun (JK Shin) has revealed. The Samsung executive shared the milestone with Korean new agency Yonhap News (without giving exact numbers), which translates roughly into 190,000 Galaxy S III devices being sold each day and reaching the figure in less than half the time of its predecessor — the Galaxy S II. In June, Shin said that he expected the Galaxy S III to reach 10 million units sold in July, seeing an added boost as the handset went on sale in the US and other significant markets. By the end of the month, the device will be on sale via 296 carriers in 145 countries worldwide. In terms of comparative figures, the Samsung Galaxy S II chalked up 3 million pre-orders. The company recently revealed that it and predecessor the Galaxy S, have together passed 50...

Apple’s new iPad launches in China with short queues and no chaos

Apple product launches in China are renowned for being chaotic and rowdy but today the company began selling its new iPad in the country under rather unusual circumstances. Instead of being greeted by massive queues and anxious customers — as has become the norm — the Retina display equipped device has enjoyed a more muted and organised opening. Yesterday, Apple laid the foundations for a more controlled launch day when it introduced a pre-sale reservation system that requires all customers to register their interest in the device — priced from RMB 3688 ($579) – in advance of buying the flagship tablet computer. As well as insuring against large queues, the system is designed to restrict the influence of scalpers, independent sellers that buy the device in bulk with the aim of reselling it for profit, whose large numbers have blighted previous launches. The introduction has avoided a repeat of the madness of March’s iPhone 4S launch and Apple’s flagship Chinese store — in Beijing’s Sa...
