Quinn Damerell: App developer bringing home the Baconit

As a young boy Quinn Damerell enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together again. What started with ‘monster creations’ using Lego many years ago, has lead to an acclaimed Windows Phone app called Baconit that was recently voted app of the year in the inaugural Community App Awards. The app is a mobile client for Reddit, a popular social and user generated website that provides links to articles around the web that other Reddit users have liked. According to its developer, Baconit is the first Reddit client on any mobile platform to have full synchronisation between the website and a phone. Quinn, 23, was born in Indiana and has just graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Computer Science. In August he will be moving to Seattle to start a new job with Microsoft on their Windows Phone team. He spoke with Conversations about Baconit, why he prefers developing for Windows Phone and why he can’t make up his mind between the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Lumia 900. Where...

Office 365 on your Lumia

Office 365 is Microsoft’s online, cloud-based version of the regular Office suite that most… well, office workers spend a large proportion of their day with. The online version is a good product, which replicates almost every part of the offline Office suite’s functionality as an online app. Unlike some competing online productivity suites, Office 365 commands a monthly subscription fee, but that also buys you a 99.9% uptime SLA and similar assurances regarding security and back-up. If you’re serious about your work, those will count for a lot more than the fairly trivial fee. For most small and medium businesses, it’s a lot more safe and secure than their current arrangements are likely to be. Looking forward, the newly announced Office 2013 is, in some respects, closer to Office 365 than the traditional set of offline applications. I’m typing this on the preview release of MS Word 2013 now and note that, by default, I’m saving to remote servers using SkyDrive/Office 365 rather than ...

Canon officially announces the EOS M, their first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera

A few days ago we reported about the leaked image of the then unannounced Canon EOS M camera. This was to be the first mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera from the company and was supposed to be announced on July 23. And just as expected, here comes the full announcement from Canon. As with other cameras of this kind, Canon is boasting about the existence of a DSLR size sensor and the ability to change lenses in a relatively compact camera that you can carry around with you every where. They are also targeting the everyday photographers with this camera, that is, the people you see going around clicking pictures of things usually with their mobile phone cameras, but with this they can do the same with much better results. The Canon EOS M uses an 18 megapixel APS-C sensor that is based on the sensor from the EOS-650D. The EOS M is launched alongside two new lenses, the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM pancake and the EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom that are based on Canon’s new smaller...

Another Xperia go torture video surfaces

Posted in: Android, Mobile hardware, Mobile phones 16 hours ago by Ian Sony has hyped the Xperia go as a rugged smartphone ever since its recent release, and it now yet another group of sadistic testers have decided to see just how resilient it really is. The guys from German tech site A1 have taken it upon themselves to put the Xperia Go through a gauntlet of various tests to push the limits of its IP67 certification, including dunking it in a pool, running it over with a car, and making it into an ice cream sandwich. Get it, Ice Cream Sandwich? Check out how things went. Warning, if you don’t like seeing cute little smartphones get abused, then this video is not for you. Stay tuned for our review on the ultra-resilient Xperia go, which is already in the works. Via View the original article here

Apple releases new iPhone 4S ad, starring Martin Scorsese

Posted in: iOS, Mobile phones, Mobile Services About an hour ago by Prasad Apple has released yet another ad for the iPhone 4S highlighting the Siri functionality. And this time, they have none other than Mr. Martin Scorsese himself. This new ad sticks to the same formula as the previous ones. The celebrity is using the Siri functionality on the iPhone 4S to manage day to day tasks such as changing appointment schedules, which highlights the ease of using just your voice to do these otherwise tedious tasks while simultaneously highlighting the conversational nature of Siri. This particular video has Mr. Scorsese is in a cab, finding out the schedule for the day, moving around calendar events, locating his friend on a map using the ‘Find My Friends’ service and finding out the traffic on his current route, all using his voice. Personally, this is my favorite of the new series of Siri ads featuring celebrities because it actually shows the celebrity, Mr. Scorsese in this case, doing so...
