Sony LT29 Hayabusa may be called Xperia TX, while the Xperia tablet to go as Xperia Tablet S

Posted in: Android, Mobile phones, Rumors, Tablets August 12th, 2012, 11:44 by Peter Recently a DLNA certification revealed that the Sony Xperia LT30i ‘Mint’ will be called Xperia T. Now, XperiaBlog reports that the Sony Xperia LT29i ‘Hayabusa’ will go by the name Xperia TX. The close naming of the two phones makes sense, considering how similar their specs are. Plus, the Hayabusa has already launched in Japan as the Xperia GX. An Xperia Tablet is also laying in wait in the rumor mill, though some EXIF info from a photo uploaded to Picasa reveals that won’t be it’s final name either. The Model name field of the EXIF data lists the tablet as ‘Xperia Tablet S’. It’s clearly a successor to the old Sony Tablet S, with the same wedge design and 9.4? screen but a thinner body and newer Tegra 3 chipset. The photo is blurry, probably of the table that the tablet was placed on, so it doesn’t tell us much about image quality, but it does confirm that the camera has 8MP resolution (up from 5MP ...

Audi puts Samsung-made 7.7-inch AMOLED display instead of a rear-view mirror in the new R8 e-tron

Posted in: Various 17 hours ago by Vince Supercars aren’t known with their high usability and the new Audi R8 e-tron is a breathing proof of this. The car doesn’t have a back window and to fix the issue Audi has fitted it with a rear-view camera which works in conjunction with a 7.7-inch AMOLED rear-view mirror. Naturally, the display will be supplied by Samsung Display and we assume it will be the same unit used in the Galaxy Tab 7.7 slate. Audi says it preferred the AMOLED display for its thinness and power efficiency compared to regular LCDs. The car-maker is also working to enable extra information to be displayed on the mirror-replacing screen in the future. For now, the unusual 7.7-inch AMOLED rear-view mirror with the special camera will only be featured in the new R8 e-tron, but the company says that as the technology advances and becomes cheaper, it will find its place in the rest of the company’s vehicles. Kickin’ it at Helsinki Flow Festival

While I was impressed by the Helsinki Flow Festival‘s opening show on Wednesday, especially Joose Keskitalo & Kolmas Maailmanpalo (FI) and Bon Iver (US), it’s now left me in awe.  I am quite the festival enthusiast, but Flow Festival has so many flavors, my artistic palette has suffered from creative overload. And it tastes so good. It was difficult to decide where to go last night with the well-known Main Stage acts, hand-picked fan favourites at the Cirko (The Other Sound) stage, Nokia Lounge DJs bumping tunes next to a conveniently located bar and delicious food choices. I spent most of my time exploring the iconic Suvilahti area (a former power plant) that is home for Flow, getting to know the space and enjoying the music.   A few of yesterday’s groups are already staples in my music collection, like Miike Snow (SE, pictured above) and Four Tet + Caribou (UK/CAN). Other groups, like Elifantree (FI), Kolektif Istanbul (TUR) and Antero Lindgren (FI), are new to me and I look for...

Qwerty keyboard wins the battle of the input methods

Last week we ran a poll asking you to choose your favourite input method on a mobile phone. The choices were:  Number keypadQwerty keyboardTouchscreenVoice commands Over the years many of us will have used most of these at one stage or another. Even now, your phone probably has the capability to use a couple of them.  For example, the Nokia Asha 300, Asha 202 and Asha 203 all have a number keypad and a touchscreen. Likewise, the Lumia smartphones are primarily touchscreen devices but you can also use voice commands on them.  But we wanted to see your favourite way of typing, using and interacting with your phone. We can now reveal the results:  That’s a fairly convincing win for the Qwerty keyboard, getting nearly half of your votes. I must say that I am a little surprised the touchscreen did not do a little better. After all, it has become the dominant form across smartphones and, increasingly, the aspirational and budget-conscious feature phones as well. Perhaps, it is a reflection ...

Here’s how iOS 6 apps look like on a taller display

Posted in: iOS, Mobile phones, Rumors August 10th, 2012, 17:32 by Ian We’ve heard a wide variety of sources claim that the upcoming iPhone will feature a larger display, and today we can add one more to the list. When put through an iOS simulator at a resolution of 1136 x 640 (the rumored resolution of the iPhone 5), many iOS 6 apps scale perfectly to the new size, revealing interfaces which have been tweaked and optimized for the different aspect ratio. The upcoming iPhone 5 (if that’s what it’ll be called), is rumored to feature a screen size which will measure just above the 4 inch mark, and will supposedly also have a new aspect ratio of 16:9. Above, you can see how the iOS 6 homescreen scales to support 20 icons (not counting the dock), while the current iPhone only supports 16. Here’s how the Apple keyboard gets scaled in landscape mode. While many of the iOS 6 apps appear to make good use of the new resolution, there are a number of legacy apps, which have letterboxing along t...
