Two weather apps take their place in the sun

A few weeks ago I attempted to assess some weather apps for the Nokia Lumia to identify, not necessarily, the best apps but ones with unique features that made them stand out. Nevertheless, many of you were quick to point out that I had made a glaring omission in not considering the Weather Flow and Weather View apps. I’m sure after this post many of you will be recommending other weather apps as well! As I said, in my first post it’s all about personal preference and having a choice is a good thing. Most of all, it is great that you are eager to share your tips and are so vocal about your favourite apps.  So, in that spirit and to help make amends for not including them in the first post, here is a belated appraisal of Weather Flow and Weather View. Weather Flow As I installed and started using Weather Flow, two things struck me.  Firstly – and in my defence – it’s easy to see why it was initially overlooked. There is nothing novel about the app and neither does it come packed with f...

Google to downrank websites that receive copyright removal notices

Posted in: Online Services August 11th, 2012, 18:24 by Prasad The days of easily finding pirated content on the Internet are slowly be coming to an end. With the recent SOPA/PIPA and Megaupload fiasco, it’s clear that the powers that be are starting to crack down on the pirated content on the Internet by trying to shut down websites that provide them. The latest move comes from Google, who have announced that they will now start downranking websites that receive valid copyright removal notices. The more notices a website receives, the lower the rank will be of these sites. Note that Google will not be removing these sites entirely from their results; just downranking them, so with some effort you may still be able to access them. Or you can just use any of the other search engines out there. Google feels that this move will direct people towards purchasing genuine content when they search for something, like a movie or TV show, instead of providing them easy access to pirated content...

Posted in: Android, Tablets 17 hours ago by Peter The recently announced Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 will cross the English Channel and will arrive at Samsung’s Westfield Brand Store in Stratford (which, coincidentally, is where the Galaxy S III debuted in the UK) this Thursday. The Samsung Mobile UK tweet that announced this didn’t mention anything on the pricing, but there are a few retailers accepting pre-orders for the slate already. Clove UK is also accepting pre-orders, but they have no info on shipping da...

Getting to know you: Duncan Beard, Sales Leader at Nokia

Duncan Beard is an integral part of Nokia’s UK & Ireland Sales team and is the Account Director for Everything Everywhere. We talked to Duncan to understand more about what he does, how he does it and what sparks his engine! Rebecca Gloyne: A quick and easy one to start with Duncan! How would you best describe yourself in 140 characters? Duncan Beard: Sure. I’m an experienced sales leader at Nokia, who is passionate about understanding, and delivering for the needs of our customers. RG: Did you intend to go into sales when you started your career? Is that original fascination still alive within you today? DB: When I moved into mobile, it was the dot.com boom and mobile industry was an incredibly exciting place to be. Right now, it’s far more exciting and the future even more so. One of the biggest changes has been speed...

Practical project: Custom tiles for your homescreen

As part of our practical project series, we’re turning our Nokia Lumia smartphones into really useful tools for productivity and fun. Whether its adding a QR code to your lock screen to eliminate business cards, or making the live tiles on your homescreen to be just how you want them. That’s what we’re talking about this week. For the most part, Live Tiles are controlled by the app they belong to which leaves very little room when it comes to customisation. The Live Tile is how the developers created it. While this is perfect for most apps, sometimes you want a tile that does a very specific function. Quick Tiles is downloadable from the Windows Phone Marketplace and costs just 79 pence. I’ve tested it out on my Nokia Lumia 800 and created a number of Live Tiles just the way I want them. First up, I have a very important event happening next year; I’m getting married. And, just so I don’t forget the occasion (the future Mrs Fraser would be very displeased) I’ve created a countdown til...

Prep for iMovie with iPad2 – Schools Love this App

There was no endpoint listening at http://api.microsofttranslator.com/v1/Soap.svc that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details. Mesa, Arizona – When we first published Prep for iMovie with iPad2 in 2011 we had the home video maker in mind, and never considered that America’s schools would soon be buying this app. Prep for iMovie with iPad2 delivers 26 minutes of instruction teaching iPad’s iMovie video-editing software. Prep for iMovie with iPad2 provides in-app media so the student can build the same final project that the app teaches. Perhaps this use of in-app media made it attractive to educators. The user saves in-app media to the camera roll, so he can practice what the lesson demonstrates. It’s almost like an in-app assignment. Mosa Motion’s Kari Adams said, “We weren’t trying to build an app for schools, we were just trying to provide a decent learning experience for aspiring video ...
