What would you do for a Lumia?

Published by Paul Coombes on August 24, 2012   We often see interesting initiatives on our social channels, like followers who shoot 3D photos with their phone or photograph the moon with custom-made accessories. But when Damien tweeted the following, we knew this was on another level: “@Nokia I will let you paint my car for a Lumia 900. I am serious.” – @skooal – aka Damien, from Wexford Well, how could we resist such temptation? To physically haul ourselves to the beautiful Emerald Isle (the country itself is reason enough to go!) and jazz up the car of one of our fans, was just too much of a mouth-watering prospect to resist. So, after a few weeks of meticulous planning, hours of poring over top-secret blueprints and a million cups of coffee, we are ready to unveil Damien’s new Lumia car! The result looks pretty cool too, I’m sure you’ll agree! And if you live in Ireland, you might come across the car yourself (Damien drives from Wexford to Dublin every day). If you do, make sure y...

New Alliance helps you find ‘needle in a haystack’

When was the last time you had that frustrating experience in a large supermarket, where you’ve been walking around in circles trying to find a small item? Or, maybe you once found yourself wandering for ages around a huge airport or shopping centre, trying to find a toilet? Problems such as these, and other many other needle-in-a-haystack scenarios cannot be solved with GPS, but they are waiting to be solved by a new industry alliance based on indoor navigation that is being launched today. The In-Location Alliance, of which Nokia is a founding member, includes more than 20 companies across different industries. The alliance will be working together on the innovation and promotion of a new standard-based short-range wireless technology that will make it possible to locate objects or positions indoors with extremely high accuracy using mobile devices. Nokia has focused on and promoted the Nokia High Accuracy Indoor Positioning (HAIP) Solution, using a modified new generation, low en...

Make Me Smile Monday #33 (or #1 if you’re new)

Regular readers of Nokia Connects will know that Monday is a time where I take a break from unboxings, reviews and photo galleries and bring you a taste of what’s been making me grin over the past seven days. So, get ready to chuckle or chortle, smirk or smile, grin or grimace. It was a tough choice for top spot this week, but my love for Lego just edged this story to the head of the class. While the athletes were running, jumping and throwing in London recently, members of the public were engaged in a Herculean task of their own. They managed to create a map of the world using *one million* Lego bricks. In two weeks. Complete with landmarks and mountain ranges, this is a true mark of human endeavour (over 4,000 people were involved) and whilst they didn’t go faster, higher, stronger, they certainly went bigger. Bigger than ever before, and it made me smile (hat tip to Glenn Letham for that one). ***** That story that was edged into second place? The mobile phone throwing world record...

New JB ROM for the international Galaxy S III leaks, flash at your own risk

Posted in: Android, Mobile software 16 hours ago by Johnny Just a couple of days after the last Jelly Bean-ed Touch Wiz update for the international Galaxy S III leaked we got a new one. The new build, version XXDLH6, is available for download and is flashable via ODIN. The official update can’t be far behind these unofficial leaks with the most likely scenario pointing to it getting announced at the IFA floor at the end of the month. You can download the Jelly Bean update over at the source link but keep in mind that it isn’t official yet so installing it voids your warranty and if you don’t know what you are doing you might brick your device. Nikon announces Android-based Coolpix S800c point and shoot camera

Nikon has finally announced their first Android-based Coolpic S800c point and shoot camera. On the camera side, it comes with a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, 10x optical zoom, 1080p video recording with stereo sound, 3.5-inch OLED touchscreen, EXPEED C2 processor, GPS and Wi-Fi. On the Android side, it comes with Android 2.3, Gingerbread pre-installed. You may remember that in yesterday’s article I wrote that it seems unlikely that Nikon would put stock Gingerbread on a camera. Well, turns out there is more to it than that. The S800c has two modes in the software. One is the camera mode, where it behaves like any other Nikon camera with a touchscreen, and the other is the Android mode, where it’s like a mini Android smartphone, complete with all your favorite apps from the Play Store. There is no cellular connectivity, so you will have to use the built-in Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet but other than that it would pretty much behave like your average Android device. When you have to...
