Huawei Ascend P6 down to £199 in the UK

Carphone Warehouse cuts SIM-free price by £80 With the arrival of phones like the Moto G and Nexus 5 , pricing in the mid to high-end Android smartphone space has become more competitive than ever. Now we're starting to see other handsets creep down in price to meet this new challenge. UK retailer Carphone Warehouse has dropped the price of one such contender, the Huawei Ascend P6, to £199.95 off-contract, down £80 from its previous price. Though it lacks LTE connectivity the Ascend P6 is a solid mid-range Android phone with a good-looking screen and decent build quality, including an aluminum-framed design. But we're less enamored by Huawei's software design and performance. Here's what our own Andrew Martonik had to say about the P6 in his review  — In terms of physical design and manufacturing prowess, Huawei has a winner on its hands with the Ascend P6. It has managed to take a well-made and good-looking body that is impossibly thin, fill it with some high-...

Treat your Nexus 4 to a sexy wood back

Give your Nexus 4 some wood There's a lot of talk about Motorola taking their sweet time to make the wood backs for the Moto X available, but if you've got a Nexus 4 and are a little bit handy you can get some wood right now. Leland Sindt , A.K.A. proprietor of thinWood on Etsy , has designed some incredible looking wood replacements for the back glass of the Nexus 4, and you can get one of your own for $20. Choose from tiger-eye, burlwood, curly maple and more; and installation is as easy as replacing a broken glass back — a couple screws and being careful according to our own Andrew Martonik.  You can see a video of the prototype process, as well as talk to the man making and selling them right in the forums . If the picture above is enough to get your plastic out of the wallet, hit the Etsy page for ordering information. Nexus 4 Wood Back Replacement

Chromecast app gets a redesign

There's not much reason to open the Chromecast app once everything's set up, but that doesn't mean Google's still not paying attention to it. the Chromecast app got itself a bit of a redesign tonight, adding the pull-out drawer that all good apps should have. A link to Chromecast-compatible apps is tucked away in that drawer, and the settings menu has been moved there as well. You get a couple new things when looking at individual Chromecasts, too. The time-zone selector now shows the time relative to GMT, and you can now see the Chromecast MAC address, should you need to do some network troubleshooting. All in all, a nice little answer to those who have worried that Google had forgotten about the high-def dongle.
