Review: Mini review: Garmin HUD

One day, car technology might put an end to just about all road accidents. But right now we're in a tricky phase where drivers are being bombarded with more and more features and functions. That's a major problem when it comes to driver distraction. It's never a good idea for to take your eyes off the road ahead, even to glance momentarily at your navigation screen. That's exactly where the new Garmin HUD comes in. It's a head-up display that's compatible with literally any car, no matter how new nor how old. The idea is that is delivers heads-up navigation cues along with other information including your current speed and time to destination so that you can keep your eyes forward and on the road. Garmin HUD: How does it work? So, how does it all work and is it any good? The first part of the how does it work bit involves the unit itself. It's a little black tablet the size of a small smartphone, albeit much thicker. It's actually a hinged two-part devi...

Philips Xenium W9588 now available in China for whopping $823

It seems there’s a subset of users in China who can’t imagine owning a non-clamshell smartphone. Samsung has thus far served this community best and now Phillips wants a bigger slice of the pie. The newly launched Xenium W9588 isn’t exactly an easy sell, quite the contrary. It’s a super-expensive mid-range smartphone with specs that include a pair of 3.5-inch 854×480 touchscreens, MediaTek’s MT6589 1.2GHz quad-core chip, 1GB of RAM, 8-megapixel camera on the back, and 4GB of expandable memory. All this is sold for whopping 4,999 Yuan, the amount that translates into some $823. Yeah, you should be able to get a much better phone for that money so we’re not really sure who in the world would want to get the Xenium W9588 over something much better; something like HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4 or LG G2. You *really* need to love the clamshell form factor to get Philips’ baby instead of something else. And no, we’re not sure whether the W9588 will ever be released in the West… and honestly, w...

Google acquires Boston Dynamics, maker of some of today’s coolest robots

Google is entering the robotics market, big time. What we used to know as search giant may soon turn into an overall giant, spanning a number of industries while trying to make our lives easier. As part of that mission, the Mountain View-based corporation acquired Boston Dynamics, the firm behind such cool robots as Big Dog, PETMAN and WildCat, all of which were made for the Department of Defense. Now we’re sure Google doesn’t want to stop those government contracts, but we would also like to believe they want to bring robots to our homes, helping us with mundane tasks. We have hard time imagining the use cases at the moment, but we’re sure the G-folks know what they’re up to. Although the financial details of the deal were not disclosed we doubt this was a cheap buy, quite the contrary; and in that sense we can’t wait to see the first G-bots hitting the streets. In the meantime, check out one of the coolest robots we’ve seen to date – the Wild Cat. [Via: AndroidCentral] Dusan has be...

Review: Sony VPL-FHZ55

The Sony VPL-FHZ55 comes with some "world first" claims that deserve your attention. The first thing to notice, though, is that this is a weighty product, designed for semi-permanent installations in educational and corporate environments and - at 12kg - certainly not for carting between rooms. This is the first time we've seen a 3LCD projector - a projection chip technology popularized by Epson and Panasonic - get the lamp-less treatment, with Sony employing a blue laser light source. It's priced at around £7,000 (about US$11,490, AU$12,540) at launch and yet it could have been more expensive. The use of blue lasers keeps the cost of the VPL-FHZ55 down: red or green lasers would have pushed that price northwards. This is a serious projector: seriously bright and seriously long-lasting, and it's that last characteristic that's the reason for the VPL-FHZ55's existence. It's rated to keep on going for 20,000 hours, thereby avoiding the regular expense o...
