Here is the breakdown of what Android version AC readers are running

AndroidCentral readers love them some Kit Kat I love data and charts. Really love them, like totally nerd out over them. Last week, we put up a poll asking you which version of Android you were running . I knew I could use your answers and do something with them. Thus, the quarterly AC reader version charts were born. And this pretty chart that is totally a remix of Google's. For now, this is just for discussion purposes. We can compare it to December 2013 numbers from Google themselves  and see a few things. The first, and biggest, is that we love our Kit Kat . I'm sure a larger percentage of our readers (compared to the general population) have one of the few phones or tablets running Android 4.4 , and the number of people who said screw it, then rooted and did it themselves is going to be a much higher percentage than normal folks.  The second thing that jumps out at me here is the very low number of people running Gingerbread . Compared to Google's 24.1 percent ...

LG to showcase 21.5-inch Chromebase at CES

LG is set to join Google’s Chrome OS initiative at the upcoming CES in Las Vegas. At that time, the Korean company will unveil the 21.5-inch Chromebase, an all-in-one computer packaged in a “chic, space-saving design.” Specs wise, this computer rocks Intel Celeron chip, IPS full HD screen, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam. When it comes to included ports, users will find HDMI-in, 3 USB 2.0 + 1 USB 3.0, and Ethernet port. Also included in the package are keyboard, mouse and cable organizer. When it comes to preloaded software, aside from a standard set of Google’s apps, users can also get more apps from the Chrome Web Store, which features tens of thousands of web apps. Price was not unveiled but we would be surprised if LG’s Chromebase ends up costing more than $200-$300. Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited abo...

BlackBerry: Android and iOS combined for 40 million new BBM registrations in 60 days

CEO drops cryptic hint at desire for 'BlackBerry experience' on Android A few small nuggets of Android news out of BlackBerry's otherwise not-exactly-uplifting quarterly earnings report this morning. We'll break it down here in handy bullet-point form: More than 40 million new BBM registrations have come from Android and iOS in the past two months. BlackBerry didn't break it down any more than that. More than a dozen manufacturers are set to preload BBM on their hardware , as previously reported. The one we're most likely to see here in our neck of the woods is LG , but even that's subject to the whim of the carriers (in the U.S.), most likely. Apparently BlackBerry's new CEO John Chen would like to see some sort of "BlackBerry experience" on Android , which is only fair given that BlackBerry's doing all it can to put the Android experience on its phones.  And that's that. The kids at CrackBerry are covering this as only t...

Watch the movie Elf for free on Google Play today

A classic family-friendly holiday movie to enjoy for free Google Play is bringing some holiday cheer to us all with a free SD version of what has turned into a classic Christmas movie in recent years, Elf . For what we can assume is a limited time only, Google Play Movies is offering up  Elf for free so that even more people can watch or re-watch this family-friendly Christmas movie. To watch, simply head into the Play Store — you could do so from the link above — and select "add to library" and start watching. You can always return to it later if you don't have the hour and a half free this moment. When we picked up our copy we noticed you could still buy the film in HD for about $5.99, but there's no shame in snagging the free version for now.
