Hands-on review: CES 2014: Acer C720P-2600 Chromebook

Acer divvied up a couple of new Android tablet devices earlier this week but also footnoted its announcements with a curiously familiar laptop called the Acer C720P-2600. Those that missed out Acer's first budget and touchscreen Chromebook, the C720P , should expect practically the same 1,366x768 touchscreen equipped laptop except in a new coat of white. Otherwise the 11.6-inch laptop comes equipped with the same Intel Celeron 2955U processor plus 32GB SSD storage and 2GB of RAM. Touchy touchy The touchscreen on the Acer C720P-2600 is one of its most important features and it is there to let you poke at things on your screen. But, that's really just about all it can do. There are not any special gestures other than pinch to zoom or a touchscreen GUI to make the experience any different than using a mouse to click on icons. On one hand it's a relief that the laptop does not come with any additional bloatware to slow down the quick launching Chromebook users have become acc...

Hands-on review: Lenovo Y50 review

Everyone knows Lenovo for its leading business and hybrid laptops (and sometimes both with the ThinkPad Yoga ). But did you know that the Chinese vendor also makes gaming laptops? Amid the Alienwares and Origins of the world, it's easy to forget, but not for long. This is the Lenovo Y50 , the successor to the company's Y510p gaming notebook and a first for Lenovo in several ways. Lenovo recognized that, even in the gaming clamshells, thin is most certainly in. But the vendor also hopped on another growing trend: 4K. Yes, the Y50 is Lenovo's first 4K gaming laptop – that's Ultra HD, or 3840 x 2160 – though it doesn't come standard (1920 x 1080 does, however). Lenovo didn't have all the details in time for my visit to its flashy CES 2014 installation. What I know so far is that the Y50 will pack up to an Intel Core i7-4702HQ CPU, the latest Nvidia GTX graphics chip and up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM. The Nvidia GPU is not standard, but at least the Y50's fresh and f...

Moto X in bamboo: Ridiculously awesome [hands-on]

Behold, the bamboo Moto X . OK, only the back is bamboo — but this thing looks sweet. We opted for the white face this time around (and it's already collecting pocket lint), along with black buttons. Maybe you'll love it. Maybe you'll loathe it. Maybe you'll look at the extra $100 you have to pay for it and scoff. Or maybe you're hoping one of the other three wood backs (yes, we know bamboo is a grass) we saw earlier this year will soon become available. To each his own. Also cool: The setup wallpaper is — you guessed it — bamboo. For now, just feast upon the glory that is the best Android phone you can buy  — in bamboo. read more
