Video: CNET, “Nokia Lumia Icon has the goods”

CNet have got a quick hands on with the Nokia Lumia ICON – which they describe as a shrunken 5? version of a phone with the capabilities of the Nokia Lumia 1520. The shape and the colour is said to fit Verizon’s more somber shades. The straight edges mean it can stand up on its own. The curve at the back makes it comfortable to hold. 5? but still triple column. Smaller but still tappable. 1080p resolution makes everything very crisp. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqslxzwLrJU Jess finds it a little bit heavy/thick/bland for her taste, but she says you do get that really nice camera and fast processor. BTW, for those finding this ‘heavy’ please compare what they said about the Xperia Z1. Also 5?. The Nokia Lumia ICON weighs in at 167g. The Xperia Z1 weighs 170g. Hands On With The Verizon Nokia Lumia Icon

Due to the inclement weather across the U.S., our Verizon Nokia Lumia Icon review unit arrived a little late, but as they say, better late than never! We’re hard at work on the full review, but just wanted to give you a quick look at Nokia’s latest Lumia device. Not only does the Lumia Icon rock amazing specs, a beefed out camera and a sexy design, it came in a huge 007 like case complete with glowing red LED lights inside the case. Also included are red Nokia Monster PurityPro wireless headphones, which go all the way up to 11. Opening the case up kinda made me feel like Ryan Gosling in Drive. And then I was looking over my shoulder for Cylons. So many emotions. Anyway… As far as specs go, this Windows Phone is a powerhouse. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 runs the show, clocked at an amazing 2.2GHz. The Lumia Icon touts 2 GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory. A 5 inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD OLED display commands attention, and is protected by a layer of Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3. The screen...

Microsoft could bring Android app support to Windows, Windows Phone

Software giant 'seriously considering' Android app support, reports The Verge Future Windows Phone handsets and Windows computers could run Android apps, according to a report from The Verge's Tom Warren. Citing unnamed sources, the outlet says Microsoft is "seriously considering" bringing support for Android applications to its Windows and Windows Phone operating systems. While discussions are said to be ongoing within Microsoft, and opinions within the company apparently sharply divided, the move is seen as a possible way for Windows Phone to bridge the so-called "app gap" between with Android and iOS. Warren points out that the ubiquity of Android and its relatively strong library of apps could allow Microsoft to position Android support as a "Band-Aid" for its Windows Phone app woes. The move has echoes of BlackBerry's Android runtime, a feature which in its latest release allows BlackBerry 10 devices to run Android apps alongsid...

Huawei Ascend D3 with 1.8GHz octa-core chip coming soon?

In addition to the Ascend P7, Huawei will also launch the Ascend D3 at some point this year. As far as we (don’t) know, this model could launch from the floor of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona… or not. We do know that the D3 could easily be more powerful than the P7. While the latter is targeting a mainstream audience, the D3 is more of a geeky device with better hardware and not that fancy design. That’s, at least, the way we see things. According to Unwired View, the Ascend D3 could sport Huawei’s own octa-core chip, HiSilicon Kirin 920, clocked at 1.8GHz. This SoC will rely on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture, combining four faster (Cortex-A9) with four slower (Cortex-A7) cores. We would like those faster cores to be Cortex-A15, but I guess Huawei is still not there. Other D3 specs apparently include a 16-megapixel camera on the back, 5-inch full HD screen and a 6.3mm-thin body. If this phone is not too expensive, Huawei may have a winner at its hand, one that could easily sell in...

LG G Pro 2 is officially official; Here are 6 things you should know about it

Just as we expected, LG has officially announced the G Pro 2 in Korea. The successor to the Optimus G Pro is one of the best devices ever made, with some features even the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is missing. To help you cut through the clutter, we wanted to highlight the G Pro 2's key selling point. Here 6 things you should know about it: 1. Processor / Memory The G Pro 2 rocks Qualcomm’s potent Snapdragon 800 quad-core chip clocked at 2.26GHz with Adreno 330 graphics and full 3GB of RAM. In addition, it comes with 16 or 32 GB of internal storage that is further expandable with microSD cards. 2. Screen This big boy packs a 5.9-inch full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display with slim bezel of just 3.3mm. This in turn provides the industry-leading screen-to-frame ratio of 77.2 percent! 3. Sound Compared to its predecessor, the G Pro 2 is 30% louder. LG managed to achieve this by using a thicker, high-power 1W Hi-Fi speaker that promises to deliver “clearer sound with more powerful bass.” We c...

Xiaomi Hongmi to be known as Xiaomi Redmi outside of China

Xiaomi’s wildly popular Hongmi smartphone is going beyond the boundaries of China. But users in other countries won’t see it selling with that name, which translates to Red Rice. Instead, the firm has opted for another (though rather similar) name – Redmi. Now, we don’t know Xiaomi’s expansion plans, but we do know they’re heading to Singapore, among other places. And for other markets, they’re best of having names local population understands better. That said, we’re not sure whether the Chinese firm’s renaming plans will also include their flagship offering, Mi3 and Mi4, which should be announced later this year. Anyhow, we’ll be on the lookout for any news coming from Xiaomi and get back to you as soon as we have something new to add. Meanwhile, expect to see the Xiaomi Redmi popping up at phone importers all around the web. [Via: GizChina] Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence"...
