Apple offered Samsung its patents for a licensing fee of $30 per smartphone and $40 per tablet

Posted in: Android, iOS, Symbian, Tablets August 11th, 2012, 20:20 by Stefan To say that the currently raging trial between Apple and Samsung has been a revelation would be a massive understatement. As the evidence piles up in the case, we get to find out more and more about the internal dealings in both companies. The latest bit of juicy information got submitted as evidence yesterday, revealing that Apple offered Samsung the rights to license its patent portfolio for the amount of $30 per smartphone and $40 per tablet back in October, 2010. According to the submitted presentation from Apple, the amount which Samsung owed for 2010 alone was in the vicinity of $250 million. It included revenue not only from sales of Android devices, but Bada OS, Windows Phone and Symbian ones as well. As most of you likely remember, this was the time when both the iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S were released. The latter had shocked Apple’s executives with its resemblance to their own company’s offerin...

Clever tricks with simple notes

For a long time, I was cursed with something I’ll call the “missing notes syndrome ”. I’d be in a meeting and make notes, or write myself a to-do list. Then almost inevitably, the next time I needed those notes, I’d discover that I was at the wrong computer or that the notes were in a different pad. I’m also constantly paranoid about losing my notepad or old ones being thrown away by mistake. And if you use machines, what happens if they break, get lost or stolen? No longer. I’ve stumbled across a note-making system that means that I can create, access and search my notes on any computer or smartphone. It’s not enormously sophisticated or difficult, but if you aren’t already operating such a system, then you might find it very useful. It also gives me complete peace of mind when it comes to having backups. Without ever having to remember to make a backup. At the core of the system is Simplenote, a web service that stores notes. So far, very mundane. I’m not enormously fond of using on...

Samsung redesigns Series 7 Gamer laptop, puts more oomph under the hood

Posted in: Computer Hardware, Mobile hardware 17 hours ago by Ian Samsung’s high performance laptop, the Series 7 Gamer, has just received a design refresh, complete with new paint job. Set to feature a new yellow finish, a SuperBright 3D LED display and an updated Core i7 processor, the Series 7 looks to make an impression. The monstrous 17.3 inch device comes in at just under 4 kilos, and really pushes the limits of what can be called portable. But at least you’ll get ample power from all that extra weight, as the Gamer 7 features a 128GB SSD for speed alongside a 1TB HDD for storage. Samsung have also jumped ship from Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 675M, and are now offering the device bundled with a Radeon HD 7870M. The device will be available in Korea starting tomorrow for 2.9 million won, which translates to roughly $2,650. However, there is no word on international availability yet. Movin’ and Groovin’ at Flow and Nokia Factory

I’ll be so sad when the lights go out following Björk’s closing show tonight at the Nokia-sponsored Flow Festival Helsinki. But I already have so many great memories to take home. As anticipated, The Black Keys (US) put on a righteous show that had me busting moves and belting out the lyrics to my favourite songs, despite the odd looks I received from nearby Finnish listeners. The rest of Saturday’s performers did their best to amaze as well, from the beautiful voice of Ane Brun (NOR) to the reggae vibes of Horace Andy and Dub Asante (JAM). I’m normally not much for electronic sounds and DJs but I couldn’t stop dancing at the Mika Snickars (SE) set and was intrigued by the sound combinations of Nicolas Jaar (US). Nokia Lounge made its mark also with seven different DJs mixing way into the night.   With help from friends, I finally had an opportunity to try a selection of the mouth-watering food I’ve smelled all weekend. Savory cashew chicken from Thai inspired Tamarin, delicious beef ...

Festival app makes it easier to go with the Flow

As a first-time visitor to Helsinki, I’ve heard the buzz around Finland’s capital: Flow Festival Helsinki is back with none other than Björk closing the show on August 12. As one of the most anticipated festivals on this or any side of the Baltic, it has a killer line-up with big-name American artists like The Black Keys and Bon Iver, as well as Swedish sensations Lykke Li and Miike Snow and a long list of Finnish bands I can’t wait to check out. There’s also a wide range of art, architecture showcases, an urban garden, discussions with artists, a variety of delicious food vendors and, of course, plenty of tasty beverages. In preparing for such a multi-faceted festival, I was worried that I would have to print out my line-up, a map and be that sad tourist fumbling through a ridiculous amount of paper. Thanks to Nokia, the main sponsor at Flow, I won’t have to. The Nokia x Flow app keeps me up to date on all the happenings at Flow. The best part? It’s available for every major phone ...

Next version of uTorrent to include “featured torrents” as a form of advertising

Posted in: Desktop software 24 hours ago by Prasad The makers of popular BitTorrent client µTorrent have announced some changes that they will be making in the upcoming version of the application and how they plan on monetizing it. So far, the free version of µTorrent offered to install toolbars during installation and that was the only source of revenue for the developers from the free version. The next version of µTorrent, however, will include something called “featured torrents”. Featured torrents will be sponsored torrents that will appear at the top of your torrent list. These will usually be to content such as movies, music, games, software, etc. Of course, all of this will be genuine and offered directly by their respective owners. This is supposed to help encourage people to download genuine content and at the same time act as a source of income for µTorrent developers. The featured torrents will only appear in the free version of the client and not in the Pro version. For m...
