We’re excited about the Lumia 920 and the ground-breaking PureView imaging capabilities we announced today.

In an effort to demonstrate the benefits of optical image stabilization (which eliminates blurry images and improves pictures shot in low light conditions), we produced a video that simulates what we will be able to deliver with OIS.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but we should have posted a disclaimer stating this was a representation of OIS only. This was not shot with a Lumia 920. At least, not yet. We apologize for the confusion we created.

We are looking forward to bringing the Lumia 920, with PureView optical image stabilization to select markets later this year.

Here is the video shown at the press conference shot using a Lumia 920. On the right is a Lumia 920 prototype with OIS. On the left is a smartphone without OIS. The difference is apparent.

Thank you for the quick response.

I figured that the original video was focused more on the technology itself, not necessarily the device using it. But it was confusing.

Thanks for clearing it up, the tech is still impressive!

Thanks for owning up to it and posting a real sample (of a prototype). My challenge to you is to recreate your “simulation” video using a real Lumia 920. Doing so will go a long way to repair the damage caused by the PureView “simulation” video.

http://twitter.com/counterblow the person

oh STFU you twat. repair the damage….give me a break. Why don’t YOU shoot the commercial one handed doing about 20mph on a bike and let us know how that turns out.

Mad World

Say WHAT?

For real, are you joking? That is so easy to do, and 20 mph is a stretch. 15 is average, I snowboard at around 30-50 MPH while recording every season, no problem.

moijk

20 mph on a bicycle of that caliber requires some heafty pedaling. I would guess somewhere around 8-10 mph on the video, or even less. someone with too much time can just measure a known object in the video, take the time and calculate the approximate speed.

Never was in doubt. Simply amazing tech.

The left is how my videos turn out unless on a tripod even standing still.  This stabilization will help a lot. Is this outside Nokia?  Very beautiful bay.

well… at least you didnt respond with… “just don’t hold it that way then” or “your holding it wrong”   :)

I already knew it wasn’t fake. Either way if it was i wasn’t going to buy the phone for the camera anyway. Lumia 920 is simply beautiful.

Image stabilization is a Big Deal; too bad you slapped egg on your face.

Optical image stabilization is really good for those of us taking still photos is dim light. It can’t make up for moving subjects but you could show shots that emphasize the extra clarity.

OTOH, it’s not hard to image-stabilize a movie after the fact, and get images almost as good as what you show; at least one consumer-grade movie editor makes it easy.

I applaud Nokia’s effort to go from not simply great photo technology, but marketing that shows people how their stuff will be nicer. Now that you’ve made an appropriate mea culpa, it’s time to back up and show your real advantages.

You have nothing to apologize for other than not releasing pricing or which carriers will have the phone.

SkumiWaki

What the heck… so nothing in the video is from the phone? Not even the photos? What’s the point so? This technology is ancient, there’s nothing new to show off.

111san

All the photos are from the phone. As metnioned, only the video of hte girl on a bike was not done on a lumia 920. That piece was to demonstrate what OIS does.

Sharpmango

you should link this youtube video with the cute girl in red video immediately – so everyone knows. Pureview is awesome, the hands-on reviews already show it, it would be a shame for so many people’s hard work to be destroyed by this error.

http://twitter.com/AlexEfimoff Alex Efimoff

It was a purely marketing fault, not technological.
PureView does what it suppose to do.

wait til reviews, now nokia have to push a miracle.

FE7MIN

I love you NOKIA !!!. keep doing the good work . pls release the
phone soon!!!!!.

Just like the Nokia N97 all over again…

akihabaranews

Real sample? Prove it? you could easily mount a Nokia on a Steadicam… Use some mirrors to show how real is this video.

Reviews2010

It still seems to work as per the previous video, but thanks for the follow up video showing the same tech in the 920, this will help clear up my camera shake. No Tripod needed yay! (this is a big one)

Looking forward to release.

Also thankyou for making the battery larger and 25% more efficient! :0)

PS: If Nokia would like a NZ tester I would certainly be more than happy to Review and do a Nature Gallery using the 920 within one of your two week trials.

I wonder if these were taking by the same camera with and without OIS, if so I wonder why the blue in the OIS seems so much richer?

http://twitter.com/AlexEfimoff Alex Efimoff

I believe the ‘overexposed’ part without OIS has been shot with automatic exposure, and the second part (with OIS) has been underexposed to save white areas.

http://twitter.com/DanielEran Daniel Eran Dilger

How does Nokia’s PureView compare to the image stabilization Apple introduced last year on the iPhone 4S, and demonstrated using video comparisons nearly identical to yours above?

http://twitter.com/BiDuSoft BiDuSoft

Thank you Nokia and M$, I should have known not to believe in anything you said or did because all of what you have done so far sound like a scam. This just further makes me shy away from your products because I know for sure that it will be full of broken promises. And no, I will not give you clowns another chance. You already had your 2nd chance with WP7 and you blew it.

So, many of the shots in the video would not be possible with the 920 camera.
This is a scam, no apology will erase this.

How about the comparison pictures on the led flash? The Nokia picture clearly shows two additional light sources. Can you describe the exact lighting setup for this and the market competition image?

Good response, for my part apology accepted. But you do understand I hope that we’ll need release dates & prices? ‘Cos Apple won’t be shy in that regard.

People. Remember. Do not forget.

And now they start removing posts here. What kind of an apology is this when you are trying to cover up the truth?

It’s already a big deal in the tech blogosphere. Even if you didn’t mean it, you should not take the risk and be more careful.

After all the firing, it seems there are still morons working at this
company. Guess they fired the thousands of soldiers but not the useless big shots.

And looks like they are deleting comments. Being able to take criticism is the first step in repairing your mistakes, Nokia.

Yousuf Iqbal

Its an old truth of multinational companies which has been unveiled.

http://twitter.com/oldsoccer oldsoccer

Nokia present his so called flagship device and the first thing is presenting things which are not true and calling something like this pure view which is not match for the 808 is another thing, but I guess Nokia your partner has some effect on you, this is normal typical Redmond tactics.

http://twitter.com/kekscom Jan Marsch

It’s not ‘confusion’. You intentionally fooled your customers. There has not been much trust left in you already. Bad idea. Weak excuse.

http://twitter.com/AlexEfimoff Alex Efimoff

yes, sure… OIS in Lumia 920 doesn’t really stabilise the image and the PureView is a big hoax, is that what you are saying?

Meizu Russia confirms “Ubuntu rumors”

Yup, just as we’ve told you before, Ubuntu is coming to a Meizu smartphone near you. We still don’t have the official announcement, but details keep coming.,, The latest information (or that’s confirmation) comes from Meizu Russia, which says that Meizu engineers are in fact working on an Ubuntu version of the Meizu MX3. The work is apparently still underway to make things stable, and in the meantime they [engineers] are also working on a new version of Android-based Flyme ROM for both the Meizu MX2 and MX3, adding that Ubuntu won’t be released until the updated Flyme ROM is launched. It is said that Meizu will use Ubuntu as its ticket to the US market later in the year. At that time, we may also see either a revamped MX3 model or the whole new MX4 smartphone that will sport even better hardware under the hood. As usual, we’ll be on the lookout for any news coming from the Ubuntu camp and let you know as soon as we have something new to add. Stay tuned… [Via: GizChina] Dusan has been...

RSSRadio allows users to subscribe, download and listen to podcasts on both the iPhone and iPad. “With the recent release of Apples “Podcasts” application the bar has been raised for look and feel in these kind of apps and its harder to stand out from the crowd” says Daniel Broad, owner of Dorada Software. Daniel further explains “Competing on features can often be the a default choice, but I decided to go the extra mile and invest in a professionally designed user interface, concentrating firstly on the iPhone but for iPad also.
